22nd June, 1939:- Australia is rapidly progressing towards industrial self-sufficiency, according to the national survey. From being predominantly a primary producer, Australia in the last thirty years has so diversified that, by 1936-1937, manufacturing industries accounted for 37.4 % of national production. The survey was carried out by the Associated Chambers of Manufactures of Australia, for the period from 1907 to 1936-37. Industry was divided into agriculture, pastoral, dairy, poultry and bee farming, forestry and fisheries, mining and manufacturing. While the population increased by seven percent, the number of people employed in manufacturing increased by 16 percent.
