26th June, 1963:- The Kennedy eloquence was turned on full blast to boost the morale of West Berliners. More than a million of them turned out to greet the US President and he did not disappoint them. “Ich bin ein Berliner”he told them to their roars of approval.”All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin.”At Checkpoint Charlie the Communists had hung sign condemning what they termed the fascist and military revival in West Germany. Kennedy responded “There are some who say in Europe and elsewhere,’We can work with the Communists.’ Let them come to Berlin. And there are even a few who say that it’s true that Communism is an evil system, but permits us to make an economic progress. Let them come to Berlin.”
