NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
4th July, 1919 : The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Hughes, has negotiated in London the sale of 1,000,000 tons of Australian wheat to Britain. The sale, which is worth about £12,000,000 over three wheat seasons, was conformed today by the Acting prime Minister, William Watt. The British Government will buy the wheat from the 1917-18, 1918-19, and 1919-20 crops for shipment to Britain, at 5/6d a bushel. The contract follows the sale last year of the Australian wool clip to Britain for at least two years, in a deal estimated to be worth £100,000,000. That was Australia’s biggest ever wool sale and the biggest wool transaction in the world.
