NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)
5th July, 1985 : “Guilty”. The jury foreman’s word rang through the crowded Sydney courtroom and Mr Justice Lionel Murphy of the High Court of Australia looked at the ceiling and then bowed his head. The historic verdict had convicted him of attempting to pervert the course of justice. The hearing centred on the Crown allegation that he attempted to influence hearings on charges against the Sydney solicitor, Morgan Ryan. NSW Chief Magistrate, Mr Clarrie Briese, said Murphy used the phrase:”And now what about my little mate.” There was no immediate indication of Murphy’s status on the High Court, from which he has been on leave.
