8th July, 1980: The $20 million-plus collapse of the Sydney-based Nugan Hand merchant bank has become a stranger than fiction mystery with the death of one of the principals, Francis John Nugan, and the disappearance of the other, Michael Jon Hand. Nugan died with a bullet in his head, in an apparent, but suspect suicide. Hand, a US veteran of Vietnam, disappeared from his inner Sydney hideout last month. He left a half-eaten meal, his passport, clothes and credit cards. The bank’s alleged links with the Central Intelligence Agency allow for ample speculations.
