12th July, 1906 : Sydney industry thrives on slavery, by exploiting unwilling women and children, according to a Sydney Labor Council inquiry. The council said children seeking jobs were asked to work without pay; many workers were paid a pittance and had no facilities to allow them to eat. Hospitals, asylums and cemeteries were filling with the maimed and broken victims of employers rapacity, the council said. The guilty parties were those who run factories, warehouses, places of pretension and resorts frequented by moneyed classes.”Slavery does exists in Sydney today”, the council said in seeking a royal commission and remedial legislation.
