16th July,1917 : Russia’s Provisional Government has crushed a Bolshevik uprising, but has failed to capture its leader Vladimir Lenin. Reports say he escaped across the border to Finland aboard a train, disguised as a fireman. The uprising brought half a million people on to the streets of Petrograd carrying banners for an end to the war and the overthrow of the new Provisional Government. There was a great deal of shooting but most of it was wild and went harmlessly into the air. The authorities hit back by circulating a document proving that Lenin was a German agent. Lenin’s close colleague Leon Trocky gave himself up to the police.
