17th July,1980 : Ronald Reagan was chosen by the Republican Party in Detroit yesterday as its Presidential candidate, and immediately called on Americans “not simply trust me, but to trust your values – our values’ in order to face what he called ‘this unprecedented calamity” of the American hostages in Teheran. Reagan ignored the calls to choose former president Ford as his Vice-Presidential running-mate, and opted for George Bush, the former head of CIA. Mr Reagan, who served two terms as Governor of California, started his career as a radio announcer before going to Hollywood.
