18th July, 1967 : Britain is to withdraw her forces from east of Suez by the middle of the next decade. The force will be cut by 20% and all servicemen will be pulled out of Singapore and Malaysia in a few years time. Britain will still be spending over £2 billion a year on defence by the mid-1970s, but Conservative MPs called the move a ‘recipe for disaster”, and warned that it presented an open invitation for China to take over the Far East.
