history XXVI

26th July, 1964 : The third successive night of race riots in Rochester, New York State, has prompted Governor Nelson Rockefeller to send in National Guards equipped with rifles and armoured cars to quell the violence. Officials feared that the crash of a police helicopter on a building yesterday, killing two blacks, might be the catalyst for an escalation of the violence. Law and order have broken down as looting mobs battle police with Molotov cocktails, stones and bricks; 500 arrests have been made and a curfew imposed. Rochester has the lowest unemployment in the whole State.
