NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

28th July, 1933 : Americanisms in talking pictures and Cockney slang are being blamed for a peculiar style of English spoken by many people of Sydney. The Education Department is determined to rid Sydney schoolchildren dialogue of all foreign influences. Phrases like ‘attaboy”, “sure”, and “I guess, are out; and if speech is to deteriorate, it seems that a true Australian, in the style of “yous blokes”, is seen as preferable.
