31st July, 1945 : The conference of the victorious powers has become a meeting of distrust. Two weeks ago Churchill, Truman and Stalin travelled to Potsdam, historic residence of German Emperors, to chart a course for post-war Europe. They disagreed where Germany frontiers should be drawn; the Western powers objected to Poland, with Russian encouragement, seizing huge areas of Germany and expelling millions of Germans. Stalin brushed aside calls for free elections in East European countries. Churchill complained that an Iron Curtain was being slammed down against the West.
