6th August, 1907 : Some 2,000 French troops made an unopposed landing at Casablanca after a naval bombardment lasting 48 hours. An earlier attempt to land had encountered heavy fire from the town’s batteries and some firing on French bluejackets from Mosque minaret, killing one man and wounding another. French warships then shelled the town, demolishing the minaret. Over 1,000 Moors were killed or wounded. The French government has been under pressure from public opinion to take action after killing last month by a mob of Moorish fanatics of nine Europeans.
