7th August, 1917 : Growing controversy about sale of titles was reflected in a heated House of Lords debate today. The prime Minister, David Lloyd George, was not mentioned by name, but the recent King’s Birthday Honours List which he drew up was the focus of the debate. Some peers complained that the number of honours conferred as a reward for donations to party funds is now scandalous. In opening the debate, Earl of Selbourne said that Liberals and Tories “are tarred with the same brush”. He called for a new rule that each honour proposal must be accompanied by a declaration that no payment or promise is associated with it. The debate ended inconclusively.
