NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

11th August, 1907 : Prince Borghese of Italy has beaten five other competitors to win what has probably been the most gruelling motor race ever staged. He covered the 8,000 miles of rugged terrain between Peking and Paris in 62 days, overcoming swamps, a brushfire and a Belgian policeman who stopped him for speeding. The route crossed the Great Wall of China, the Gobi desert, the Ural Mountains and Prussian Poland, mostly on elementary roads.
