NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

15th August, 1955 : Twelve of the Indian passive resisters demanding that Portuguese cede its enclave of Goa to India were shot dead today when they attempted to cross the border. Others who evaded the police were rounded up by Goan villagers armed with staves. News of the shooting spread a pall of gloom over the camp from which the protesters had set out, adding to the despondency induced by the monsoon. V.D.Chitale, the Communist leader of the incursion, is among the wounded.
