NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

16th August, 1952 : Without warning, a large part of north Devon was hit by a disastrous flood early today. Up to thirty-six people are feared dead and thousands have been made homeless in the resort of Lynmouth, which was devastated when rivers burst their banks and swept down surrounding hills. The torrent swamped the area so quickly that the victims had no time to flee as their houses were buried beneath the unremitting flow of mud, rocks and debris.
