NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

17th August, 1941 : The needs of Australia’s war effort have extended to collectors of elephants’ tusks. The Department of Munitions today issued an appeal to anyone who has collected tusks to donate them to the nation. As unlikely as it might seem, that tusk sitting in the drawing-room, is vital in the manufacture of weapons. The Commonwealth munitions factories are seeking a quantity of pieces of ivory, not less than 10 inches long, to make components for rangefinders.
