18th August, 1986 : Picasso’s Weeping Woman has been found in a railway station locker after having been stolen from the National Gallery of Victoria more than a fortnight ago. A group calling itself the Australian Cultural Terrorists claimed responsibility for the theft. The thieves sent a ransom note threatening to destroy the painting if their demands were not met within seven days. They wanted funding for the arts to be increased by 10 percent in real terms over three years and the establishment of a $25,000 annual art prize called the Picasso Ransom.
