21st August, 1940 : Leon Trotsky, the exiled Bolshevik leader, was assassinated today in Mexico City by an obscure individual posing as a supporter. The assassin, almost certainly acting on orders from Joseph Stalin and his secret police, smashed Trotsky’s head with an ice pick. Trotsky, who was working on an accusatory biography of Stalin, had been sentenced to death by one of the Moscow treason tribunals. Before losing consciousness, Trotsky whispered: “I am sure of victory of the Fourth International. Go forward.”
