24th August, 1919 : Prickly pear is spreading at the rate of 1,000,000 acres a year, Queensland Legislative Assembly was told. Mr Morgan moved that legislation be introduced to provide for the eradication campaign. He said there were about 20,000,000 acres of pear-infested land in Queensland, and 2,250,000 acres in NSW. He said that buffer zones should be established, and settlers should be subsiddised to clear infestation. Mr Corser said the proper way to deal with the pest was through “practical men”, not by relying on the Bureau of Science and Industry.
