29th August, 1932 : A depressed Adolf Hitler is today reported to be under heavy pressure to mount a putsch after his attempts to become German Chancellor have been frustrated by both the present Chancellor, Franz von Papen and President von Hindenburg, who gave Hitler a lecture on the street violence of his Nazi Storm-troopers. Von Papen, scion of an impoverished Westphalian aristocratic family, wants to see an authoritarian state, but not one run by the Nazis. Hitler, whose 1923 putsch fiasco landed him in gaol, insists he will seek power only by legal means. With 230 seats making them the largest Party in the Reichstag, the Nazis are talking of voting with Communists to bring down von Papen.
