4th September, 1969 : In a grave dug by lepers on the fringes of the primaeval forest, Dr Albert Schweitzer, The Saint of Lambarene, as he was called, was laid to rest, aged 90. Hospital workers and lepers wept and prayed as African girls piled tropical flowers on the coffin. When he was 31, Schweitzer, a doctor of philosophy, theology and music, gave up everything to study medicine and then establish a hospital in Equatorial Africa.
