6th September, 1928 : An invention that automatically changes a car’s gears will be exhibited at the Motor Show next month. It has just passed a road test of 25,000 miles. The device eliminates the clutch pedal. It is a brainchild of Mr J H Robertson, an engineer who developed the mechanism as a hobby, spending some 20,000 of his own money on it. For the test it was fitted to an 8hp car and driven in differing traffic around the country. Several manufacturers are showing an interest because they believe that simplified driving could enlarge the British market, which lags behind that of America.
