7th September, 1901 : The Boxer uprising officially ended today when China signed the peace protocol drawn up by a dozen foreign powers. Diplomats and Chinese plenipotentiaries were present at the Spanish Legation to hear an exchange of friendly speeches. Prince Ching, who had arrived in a chair, escorted by cavalry, solemnly declared that China intended to carry out all her pledges and hoped that China and the powers would never clash again. Under the terms of the protocol the Chinese will pay an indemnity of $739 million and will permit the stationing of troops both in Peking and in the main ports.
