8th September, 1903 : An appalling massacre of Bulgarian men, women and children has been carried out by Turkish troops in the village of Monastir. Some reports speak of 50,000 people as Turks pursue what can only be described as a policy of extermination against the rebellious Bulgarians. The despatches from Monastir say that every Bulgarian village in the area has been destroyed. The surviving inhabitants have fled to the forest but the Turks are setting fire to the undergrowth, forcing the people into the open and shooting them.
