9th September, 1958 : Race riots flared in Britain last night. Petrol bombs and thousands of milk bottles were thrown at police in west London, after white youths taunted black immigrants. Rioting continued through the night, and this morning the street of Notting Hill Gate are strewn with debris. Several people were badly hurt, and 59 people are being charged with carrying offensive weapons and other offences. The magistrate, E R Guest, said: “I feel that the peace should be kept in this neighbourhood which in my 13 years has never been so disgraceful.” Meanwhile, in Nottingham, a television cameraman is being accused of starting a riot when a mock fight, staged for the camera, allegedly erupted into the real thing.
