13th September, 1914 : The Union Jack is flying over Rabaul, the capital of New Britain, today and the Australia’s conquest of Germany protectorates in New Guinea is complete. We lost six men killed and four wounded in the battle on September 11, which began with landing of troops in Kabakaul to seize the Herbertshohe wireless station. The Australian Expeditionary Force left for New Guinea on August 19, under the command of Rear-Admiral George Patey, on HMAS Australia. HMAS Sydney, HMAS Warrego and HMAS Yarra landed troops at Kabakaul and surprised the Germans by outflanking them in the jungle.
