15th September, 1911 : “Make a memo for today – Myer’s, Bourke Street.” For tonight the store will be trading until 10 p.m. Sidney Myer, the owner of the Melbourne drapery and clothing store, ran large advertisements in local newspapers today for his “huge all-day Friday programme”. Mr Myer is making a concerted effort to expand his store’s business: “We recognise that Friday is the people’s shopping night, and as it is our intention to cater for all classes, Myer’s Friday night bargains will be of paramount importance to thrifty housewives”. Mr Myer, who was born in Poland, bought the Bourke Street business earlier this year. He has not always know such prosperity. After arriving in Australia in 1897, he opened a shop in Bendigo withi his brother. When this failed he sold goods door to door. “It is our aim to impress the name Myer’s on the public mind,” he said.
