NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

19th September, 1975 : The fragile fabric of life in Beirut, the elegant Lebanese capital, was finally ripped apart as Christians and Moslems in this sectarian country viciously fought it out on the streets. The war began as a result of the activities of heavily-armed Palestinian groups who were driven from Jordan five years ago. A great pall of black smoke hangs over the stricken city.
