NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

 

21st September, 1915 : One of the world’s most famous ancient monuments was knocked down at auction today for a mere £6,600. Stonehenge, along with 30 acres of surrounding downland, went under hammer in Salisbury as Lot 15 of the Amesbury Abbey estate, formerly owned by Sir Edmund Antrobus. It was bought by a Mr C H Chubb.
