22nd September, 1985 : With the death toll from last Thursday’s earthquake reaching 2,000, and the baseball stadium turned into a giant morgue, news of a miracle heartened Mexico City’s rescue workers today. Fifty-eight new-born babies have been rescued from the city’s largest maternity ward, which was flattened by the quake. A Red Cross worker told of how a muffled baby’s cry started a desperate excavation which revealed a cavity in the rubble.
