23rd September, 1901 : The Federal Cabinet will present a Bill to Parliament this week aimed at removing Kanakas from Queensland and ensuring its policy of a “White Australia”. The Bill provides for the reduction of labour imports from the Pacific islands over three years and the gradual deportation of remaining Kanakas after that period, so that only white workers might be employed on the sugar fields. The Queensland Labor Party has said black labour should be abolished within five years.
