26th September, 1965 : President Nasser of Egypt today cancelled a meeting with a British Foreign Minister, George Thomson, in Cairo in protest at Britain’s suspension of the constitution in Aden. Egypt believes the suspension was designed as a snub to Nasser, who backs anti-British activities in Aden. The British High Commissioner took over after Aden Ministers refused to condemn the National Liberation Front for its assassination of the Speaker of the Aden Parliament.
