29th September, 1908 : A Bill introduced by the Deakin Government today will make defence service compulsory for boys and men between the ages of 12 and 60 years.Those aged between 12 and 26 years will be obliged to do military training each year. Others up to 60 years of age will serve in the Army reserve. The legislation applies to all male British subjects who have lived in Australia for at least six months. The Minister for Defence, Mr Ewing, said it was the duty of every youth in Australia to prepare for the defence of the country in time of war. “The Government’s proposal is that for a few weeks in the year, a growing lad should be required to engage in open-air work beneficial both to himself and his country.”
