october memories / 3

3rd October, 1905 : Australia’s first Children’s Court opened at Ormond House in the Sydney suburb of Paddington today. The court, which is in the experimental stage, has been established to deal exclusively with juvenile crime. Children convicted in the court will be boarded out to homes, some in the country. The State Children’s Relief Board hopes that in this way, children who would otherwise be sentenced to jail might become useful young adults instead of hardened criminals.
