6th October, 1966 : The long standing hostility between Nigeria’s Muslim Hausas in the north and the Christian Ibos from the east erupted in wholesale killings over the weekend. Mutinous troops roamed the ancient city of Kano, hunting Ibos and shooting on sight; 1,000 people are believed to have died. Relations between the two communities worsened after the military coup last July, when an Ibo Army officer took power. The Hausas struck back and installed a Northerner as leader.
