NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN (ALMOST)

7th October, 1930 : To help women looking for means of economising in the home, the Housewives Association held a series of lectures this week. Anyone can save pennies by growing at least salad vegetables in the backyard and some housewives are running poultry as well, a sideline that can even earn you some money. It is no longer possible for many people to buy the dearest cuts of meat, but very good meals can be made with cheaper ones, such as the simple but tasty goulash from Hungary, or minestrone from Sicily.
