october memories / 11

11th October, 1939 : Thousands of Australians will be trained to be part of a huge air defence network for the British Empire. The Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, said tonight that air power could decide the war in Europe, and that a strong Air Force would in any event be the key to Australia’s coastal defence. Men will be trained as pilots, gunners and observers in Australia, New Zealand, Britain and Canada, and Menzies said the plan would give the Empire command of the air. Every effort was needed, for if Britain ”can be defeated, we cannot hope to survive alone”.
