12th October, 1915 : British nurse Edith Cavell, admirably calm until the end,was executed by a German firing squad for treason at 2 a.m. today. Miss Cavell run a school for nurses in Brussels until the war broke out when she continued to treat the wounded of both sides. Her humanitarianism won the respect of the occupying Germans, but did not save her life. On 5th August she was arrested and charged with harbouring Belgians of military age and helping English and French soldiers to escape to safety across the Dutch border.
