17th October, 1902 : Hundreds of families in Sydney are on the point of starvation, according to the Sydney City Mission. The general secretary of the mission, Mr Moore, said today that there was widespread distress throughout the city, and he made a strong appeal for financial help to relieve the misery. Distress stared the mission’s workers in the face every day, and they had to carry out their duties with empty pockets. “The sad tales they have to hear, the looks of careworn faces and the general depression of the whole place is enough to break even the strongest down,” said Mr Moore.
