18th October, 1943 : Promiscuity and moral laxity were strongly condemned today by Archbishops of Canterbury and York, following a frightening rise in venereal disease rates since the start of the war. The churchmen gave their backing to practical measures to combat this menace, which they say is bringing ruin and unhappiness to thousands and posing “a grave danger to the health of the nation”, but they added: “Moral self-control is essential if the spread of this evil is to be checked.”
