19th October, 1936 : Rioting has broken out again between Hindus and Moslems in Bombay. This time it began when Moslems objected to the erection of a Hindu temple near one of their mosques. The casualties in five days of violence now amount to 60 dead and 500 injured. A number of arrests were made this evening and 60 of the rioters were sentenced to be flogged. Six were punished straight away and then released from jail to show their backs as examples to discourage others.
