october memories / 20

20th October, 1911 : An Italian expeditionary force of some 9,000 rifles and two squadrons of cavalry completed landing operations at Tripoli today. Forts in the town were seized and the Italian flag raised. Further along the coast, Benghazi was captured after a naval bombardment. The authorities have imposed a rigid system of censorship. All reports must go to Rome, where they are held up in the most arbitrary manner. The suspicion is that Italian loses are higher than admitted. From Constantinople it is reported that the Italians, not anticipating having to operate in the interior, arrived with little transport. But the Turkish Governor of Tripoli requisitioned all available camels and retreated with his garrison into the desert.
