october memories / 25

25th October, 1916 : From today no person in Victoria, with the exception of State legislators while Parliament is in session or residents in clubs or hotels, may legally buy any alcoholic drink after 6 p.m. As yet, for some unexplained reason, the State members who made the law are still able to enjoy privileges denied to the public. If the trend in NSW, which already has 6 o’clock closing, follows in Victoria, many hotel employees will lose their jobs and sly-grog sellers will increase.
