28th October, 1948 : After his shattering defeat in Manchuria, the Chinese leader, Marshal Chiang Kai-shek told his war council in Nanking today that the entire civil war with the Communists will be decided in the next three months. Chiang’s Nationalist armies are retreating south and hoping to make a stand bellow the Great Wall. Street fighting is now going on in the provincial capital, Mukden, where the radio has been appealing for airliners to be sent to the city to evacuate officials and their families. Soon after this broadcast, the transmission suddenly broke off with the word:”Goodbye.”
