october memories / 31

31st October, 1912 : The Turkish Army is falling back in disorder beneath the hammer blows of the Bulgarians and their Serbian allies. Few could have expected when war was declared just two weeks ago that the once-feared Turkish Army would be routed so swiftly. The latest dispatches report the collapse of the Turkish defences along the Chatajla line, the last barrier protecting Constantinople from the depredations of advancing Bulgarians. The Balkan League, comprising Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Greece, has turned fiercely on the nation which once ruled them, and seems determined to drive the Turks out of Europe.
