1st November, 1959 : Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese nationalist leader, is under arrest tonight following disturbances over the last two days. On Friday night thousands of Congolese, in full war-paint, rampaged through Stanleyville chanting “Strangle the whites”, after a meeting in a local cafe, called by 34-year-old Lumumba broke up in disorder. Charities to help Africans were special targets of the rioters. Lumumba, is a former postal clerk who was jailed for embezzlement, and later helped to form the Mouvement National Congolais.
