2nd November, 1930 : Amid scenes of barbaric splendour, Ras Tafari was today crowned King of Kings and Emperor Haile Selassie of Abyssinia. The capital, Addis Ababa, was thronged by tribesmen, whose lion skin cloaks, spears and shields offered a striking contrast to the uniforms of foreign dignitaries, including the Duke of Gloucester. Haile Selassie, aged 41, was robed for the coronation in crimson velvet trimmed with gold. Abyssinia and Liberia are the only States in Africa with black rulers.
