16th November, 1934 : The High Court today ordered the release of the banned Czech writer, Egon Kisch, from detention on RMS Strathaird, where he has been kept a prisoner since his arrival in Australia a week ago. He came to attend an anti-war congress in Melbourne, but the Attorney-General, Robert Menzies, has ruled he is a threat to the Government. After Mr Justice Evatt made the release order, Kisch landed and was immediately arrested as a prohibited immigrant. It is expected that he will be in jail pending a deportation order.
